From time to time, we're pleased to use this page to introduce you to young women who smoke Chesterfield Kings. HencePolly Jo, who is almost as attractive as her cigarette is satisfying and that is high praise indeed! And, oh yes, if, for some reason, you would like a date with Polly Jo, why not send us 2120 empty Chesterfield King packs. In exchange we'll put in a good word for you with Polly Jo's mother. After all, you and Polly Jo have something in common you both know the wonderful enjoyment of Chesterfield King.
Featured as an advertisement in the July issue of men’s magazine, Playboy, in 1962, this advertisement reads more like a Playboy article than an ad. One of Chesterfield’s slogans concerned its 21 different kinds of tobaccos in 20 cigarettes (the number of cigarettes in one pack). For these ads, Chesterfield shortened the slogan to “21-20,” and found that it closely resembled the manner of recording women’s measurements (bust-waist-hips), particularly in the men’s magazine Playboy. Thus, in this series of ads, Chesterfield printed the measurements of a female models alongside their pictures, with “21-20” featured at the bottom of the advertisement. Chesterfield thus subliminally links its cigarettes with women and sex. Here, Polly-Jo (a seemingly impossible 38-21-38), is pictured smoking Chesterfields. The copy text reads, “Polly Jo, who is almost as attractive as her cigarette is satisfying and that is high praise indeed!” The woman is objectified by being compared so blatantly to the cigarette. Chesterfield is clearly unapologetic for its unabashed use of this woman’s sexuality in advertising its product. If the magazine reader “would like a date with Polly Jo,” he would have to send in 2120 packs of Chesterfields. Not only is clearly an outrageous and impossible number of cigarette packs to accrue in under a year, even for the heaviest smoker, the prize – ”In exchange we’ll put in a good word for you with Polly Jo’s mother”– is far from a guaranteed date. With this joke, the ad pretends to be transparent in nature. This bit of self-afflicted humor warms up the young reader.
