Comments:

This advertisement features a celebrity endorsement from Walter Winchell (1897-1972), a newspaper writer and radio commentator who had a very popular Saturday night radio talk-gossip show. He was popular among the younger crowd, making this advertisement attractive to teens and young adults. Whenever Winchell “signed off” on his show, he would say, “With Lotions of Love,” a catchphrase which only added to his popularity with the younger crowd. Winchell was also famous for creating slang words for love-making and other untouchable subjects which also attracted a teen audience. This ad depicts him zooming along, mimicking his extremely fast speech. (He could speak at almost 200 words per minute!) His voice was his money-maker, and in the ad, he claims that he has smoked Lucky Strike cigarettes for 11 years – though likely not exclusively – and that “Luckies are kind to your throat.” Not only does this ad target teens, it also presents spurious health claims. The ad presents the false claim that “harsh irritants are forced out” of the cigarette thanks to the toasting process.
