The world's most famous tobacco for Cigarettes.
In the early 1900s, manufactures of Turkish cigarettes tripled their sales and became legitimate competitors to Lucky Strike, Camel and Chesterfield. Murad advertisements like the one above take inspiration from the Ballets Russes (1909-1929), a Russian ballet company which gained vast popularity across Western Europe, primarily in Paris and London. From 1917 to 1920, Pablo Picasso designed the sets for three of the Ballets Russes’ principal ballet productions, and Henri Matisse designed the set for one, indicating the company’s immense artistic influence at the time. The garments worn by the men and women in such Murad ads are reminiscent of the costumes designed by Leon Bakst or George Barbier, worn by the ballerinas of the Ballets Russes. The vibrant colors, luxurious jewels, exoticism and suggestive nature of these advertisements added to their success.
