Between the late 1950s to mid-1960s Jewish community newspapers, such as the Jewish Advocate and Jewish Exponent, ran Jewish-targeted cigarette advertisements. Often the ads congratulate Jewish community on religious holidays such as Hannukah, Passover, Purim, Shevuoth, and Rosh Hashanah (New Years). Other ads featured Jewish institutions such as famous synagogues, community centers, organizations (B’Naih B’Rith) universities (Brandeis, Yehevia), or museum artifacts. (e.g. Smithsonian, Library of Congress). Others depicted images of Jewish life such as visiting the delicatessen, Sunday brunch with bagels &n lox, watching movies of Israel, learning Hebrew, or taking holidays in the Catskills or Florida. Most highly represented were RJ Reynolds sponsored ads for their Winston and Salem brands and Brown & Williamson’s Viceroy. Philip Morris placed a High Holy Days ad in 1988. Much of this Jewish-Targeted tobacco advertising was arranged via the Joseph Jacobs Agency of New York City which specialized in placing advertising in the Jewish community media.
