Comments:

Ramleh (not to be confused with Ramly made by Mentor in Boston) was renamed Helmar (Ramleh spelled backwards) in 1907 by James B. Duke, owner of Monopol Tobacco Works and S. Anargyros. He invested hundreds of thousands of dollars into producing colorful posters and advertisements featuring women holding but not smoking cigarettes and encouraging women to send cigarettes to men at war. The woman depicted here is dressed as a harlequin. She wears a blouse with a large ruffled neckline and cropped pants with a red and white diamond pattern. Her angel face and quaint heels contrast with the loud outfit, and the overall effect is whimsical and surreal.
