This advertisement is explicit in its message: Dipping is “better for my sex life” than smoking. This ad is a direct response to smoking campaigns which are able to manipulate audiences with their sexualized advertisements. It’s more difficult to make chewing tobacco sexy, so the ad explains that using chewing tobacco provides this man with more time to flirt with women inside bars, as he doesn’t have to spend time smoking outside when he could be inside picking up women (while simultaneously chewing tobacco). The ad makes it seem as if the chewing tobacco adds something to his success with the ladies, though what this might be is blatantly missing from the ad. The woman he has his eye on is scantily clad, and sits on a pool table with her skirt hiking up tantalizingly.
