Francis Newton "Frank" Gifford, former American football player and sportscaster, was born on August 16, 1930. In 1960 Chuck Bednarik blindsided Gifford in what was one of the most severe hits in NFL history, yet totally legal. He suffered severe head trauma, leading to his retirement from football for two years.
