Comments:

Old Gold features American Actress Joan Crawford (1905-1977) in this advertisement in which they compare their quick success and popularity to Crawford’s. The ad also mentions her new film, “Our Blushing Brides.” Crawford herself doesn’t provide a testimonial in this ad, but she was no stranger to cigarette endorsements. In our project’s collection she provides print ad testimonials for Lucky Strike cigarettes (1937), Raleigh cigarettes (1947), Chesterfield cigarettes (1950), and Camel cigarettes (1951, three ads). She reportedly gave up smoking and drinking in the last years of her life. She was suffering from cancer (conflicting reports indicate pancreatic or liver cancer) when she passed away from a heart attack in 1977
