Comments:

A servicewoman waits in line to speak on the telephone while an old lady gossips in the booth for hours. The woman in line is an enlistee of WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), a component of the U.S. Navy Reserve Force. The insignia on her arm reveals that she is a Petty Officer Yeoman. As she becomes impatient, a Corporal of the U.S. Army offers her an Old Gold, providing her with the patience she needs. At the bottom of the ad, tiny writing reads “Keep on buying war bonds,” providing extra patriotism to the ad. Additionally, the copy text references the WWII cigarette shortage, during which it was difficult to find certain brands on a regular basis.
