All over America- from coast to coast- from border to border- more people are smoking Camels than ever before. Millions of smokers have found by experience that cool, mild Camels suit them to a T.
This ad combines the “T-Zone” campaign with the “More Doctors Smoke Camels” and “Experience is the Best Teacher” campaigns. With all of these techniques, the ad attempts to simultaneously provide the consumer with a sense of independence and autonomy – a common tactic in cigarette advertising, even today – while also providing reassurance and recommendation from doctors and celebrities. Here, world record-holding outboard racer Vic Scott endorses Camels. He is depicted smoking a Camel after being handed a large trophy, tying smoking to good health and athleticism. This ad would have been attractive to teen boys who viewed Vic Scott as a role model; outboarding was a popular sport among youth at the time, with numerous advertisements selling outboard skippers appeared in countless issues of Boy’s Life magazine.
