Philip Morris make no claim to cure irritation. But they do say this: an ingredient, a source of irritation in other cigarettes, is not used in the manufacture of Philip Morris.
Johnny Roventini (1910-1998), the famous Philip Morris spokesperson, stares proudly at a sign which explains that “When smokers changed to Philip Morris every case of irritation due to smoking cleared completely or definitely improved.” Words like “pure” and “pleasure” cast Philip Morris as a healthful cigarette. The copy text also insists that Philip Morris does not contain a certain, unnamed ingredient which is “a source of irritation in other cigarettes.” With statements like the previous, it is shocking to read Philip Morris’ assertion that they “make no claim to cure irritation.” The ad is masquerading as honest, while it is actually manipulative, capitalizing on the public’s worries over smoking-related health conditions.
