Proved better proved less irritating to the nose and throat!
Philip Morris’ famous spokesperson, Johnny Roventini (1910-1998), calls for Philip Morris cigarettes under ludicrous claims that Philip Morris cigarettes are “LESS IRRITATING – SAFER – FOR YOUR NOSE AND THROAT!” In this ad, false health claims abound. The title text touts that smokers can enjoy a throat that isn’t “smoked-out” if they choose Philip Morris. The copy text claims that “distinguished doctors” determined that nose and throat irritation decreased when smokers switched to PM. The brand also boasts “real protection.”
Johnny started his career as ‘”the smallest bell hop ever,” resembling a child in stature. He was asked by two Philip Morris marketing executives to call for Philip Morris for one dollar. Johnny, unaware that Philip Morris was a cigarette brand, ran around asking for him. Finally, this “audition” led Johnny into his 40-year career as the spokesperson for Philip Morris. He later work with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz on “I Love Lucy.”
