With absolute safety
Operatic soprano Frances Alda (1879-1952) endorses Lucky Strike as a cigarette with “all impurities removed” and indicates that she feels she can smoke Lucky Strike cigarettes “With absolute safety.” For an opera singer, safety means protecting her voice; clearly, Lucky Strike is claiming throat protection. Lucky’s slogan, “No Throat Irritation – No Cough” furthers this claim. This health claim was unfounded, and in Lucky’s later ads, a simple “it’s toasted” slogan was used to send the same message without blatantly making false claims. Alda passed away after suffering from a Cerebral Hemorrhage. Studies have linked smoking to an increased risk of brain hemorrhage and stroke.
