Kirk Douglas (1916 – alive in 2011) The movie depicted in this Chesterfield ad, Young Man with a Horn” was filmed in 1950. Kirk Douglas is reputed to have quit smoking in 1950 when he looked at the picture of his dead father he quoted, “I thought of him on his death bed. I held up the cigarette and studied it. Who is stronger - you or me?” I asked. “I never smoked again.” In 1996, Douglas suffered a debilitating stroke which impaired his ability to speak. Kirk Douglas is the father of Michael Douglas who in 2010 was diagnosed with throat cancer, which he contributes to alcohol abuse and heavy smoking.
