Blond bombshell Helen Jepson (1904-1997), who sang lead soprano with the Metropolitan Opera for six years from 1935 to 1941, endorses Lucky Strike as “a light smoke.” She explains that her “voice and throat must be consistently in perfect condition” during opera season, so she usually doesn’t smoke during that period of time. She claims to only smoke on vacation, and even then “it is wiser for me to choose a light smoke for my voice.” In this way, she presents Lucky Strikes as healthy cigarettes, bolstering the slogan “It’s toasted–your throat protection.”
