You may never be without Fatima Cigarettes.
This ad, printed around the holidays, expresses the New Year’s wish, “May you never be without Fatima Cigarettes.” In the image, a dapper young man helps a beautiful young woman into her skates as she warms her hands in her fur muff. A lit cigarette hangs from his lips, demonstrating that he won’t part with the cigarette even as he ties his date’s skates. His date’s ensemble actually resembles the pack, with the blue foil wrapper mirrored in her dress, the golden paper mirrored in her fur accessories, and the red writing mirrored in the feather, which protrudes from a hat closely resembling a turban (following the Turkish cigarette theme). In fact, the man is never without his Fatima cigarettes, because his date is the personified version of the pack. Luxury, romance, and fun outdoorsy activities are combined to market these cigarettes to young people. The illustrator for this advertisement was Harry Morse Meyers (1886-1962). Meyers later illustrated wartime recruitment propaganda posters for the U.S. for World War II.
