Comments:

This advertisement blends romance and patriotism. The woman leans seductively toward the man and his smoldering cigarette, her own lit cigarette resting in her hand less noticeably. The man serenades the glamorous woman with a banjo as the ad capitalizes on the romantic notions of its viewers. Red, white, and blue figure prominently throughout the ad, accompanied by the line, “Of thee I sing,” intimating a connection between Lucky Strike cigarettes and American values. This ad was illustrated by John Lagatta (1894-1977), a well-known Italian-born pin-up artist who painted and illustrated print advertisements for many companies, most notably Laros Lingerie. Much of his skill lies in his portrayal of the sexual allure of a woman’s body.
