Comments:

This “Christy Girl” (the invention of well-known artist Howard Chandler Christy) is proposed to by her dapper dinner date. He smokes a Lucky Strike and blows infinity rings her way, which form the wedding band and engagement ring of smoke. The cigarette is thus associated with love and “forever.” The woman’s rosy cheeks breathe life into her ace, and show her in good health, while the box of cigarettes is angled toward her and the cigarettes point in her direction. The wide expanse of white tablecloth, coupled with her satin white evening gown, are reminiscent both of a wedding dress and purity. The illustrator of this image was Howard Chandler Christy (1873-1952), a well known artist and illustrator known for painting the “Christy Girl” in the days of the depression. In 1940 he painted the Scene at the Signing of the Constitution of the United States.
