I Do

Comments:

“I do,” this bride replies. In this context, the answer seems to apply more to the question, “Do you smoke?” than “Do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?” This glamorous woman rests contented in her flowing gown and veil, smoking a cigarette which billows up in smoke resembling her gown. The bride and her white wedding gown represent purity. The illustrator of this image, Neysa McMein (1888-1949), was a female artist who was famous for depicting healthy, fashionable American girls. She designed many advertisements and is the creator of the image of “Betty Crocker” for General Mills. She was also very influential in women’s fashion at the time, as she designed all of the covers for McCall’s women’s magazine from 1923 to 1937.
