Targeting Women

Brides with Butts
Published:
1943
Brand:
Old Gold
Manufacturer:
P. Lorillard

Tobacco Type:
Cigarette
Quote:

We're married to just one thought-For a treat instead of a treatment smoke Old Gold.

Comments:

The bride lifts her veil and leans in for a kiss, the stained glass windows of the church looming behind her. Partnership with a cigarette is compared here to lifetime partnership with a husband or wife: “Want to live happily ever after with your cigarette?” the copy text asks. Femininity, elegance, and luxury are displayed in this advertisement. The advertisement is full of pseudoscience and false health claims; the text even cites that the United States Government has concluded that “no other leading cigarette is less irritating or easier on the throat, or contains less nicotine than Old Gold.”

Keywords:

Cool, Domesticity, Female, Marriage, Mild
