Comments:

Famous pin-up artist George Petty created the beautiful woman, nicknamed Betty Petty, featured in this advertisement. This ad is clearly meant to attract young men who like pin-ups; At the bottom of the ad, an offer is presented in which a customer can send in 10 cents and two Old Gold wrappers in exchange for a frame-able reproduction of the image of Betty Petty without the advertisement text. Betty is featured fly-fishing, participating in an active, masculine pastime. The text plays with the fly-fishing aspect of the picture, creating such puns as “it’s a pleasure to be caught!” and “you wonder why you’ve been floundering around from cigarette to cigarette.” The humor created by this punning technique also makes the advertisement attractive to young people.
