Quote:

Dad often says: Trust the man who holds down a good job for a long time! I guess that's why Old Golds are so fine and trustworthy.

Comments:

This advertisement features a young woman smoking a cigarette while holding a duck, speaking to the witty headline, “It’s a ducky cigarette with no quack about it!” The cigarette is lightly compared to a suitor throughout the copy text, from being a “pleasant companion,” to giving a “first impression,” to even wearing a jacket. The comparison is complete when the young woman quotes her father’s dating advice: “Trust the man who holds down a good job for a long time!” She concludes that Lorillard has been in business since 1760, and therefore their Old Gold cigarette is “fine and trustworthy.” Her naiveté and positive attitude provide her with a younger disposition, and the advertisement speaks to other young women who might be interested in a “pleasant companion” or two.
