The woman’s dress looks like a peacock rather than a gown. She is mirroring the bird on the left- even her fan resembles that of a peacock’s feathers.

Although some advertising historians have stated that the first time a woman smoker appeared in a cigarette ad was in a billboard poster for Chesterfield in 1926. They probably meant the depiction of a “typical” American woman smoker. In actuality, women had frequently appeared in cigarette and tobacco ads from as early as the 1860’s. However, as Victor Margolin wrote, “Mythical ladies of pleasure could smoke a MURAD, but not the girl next door.”
