Comments:

This advertisement, designed in the style of a comic book, targets young adults and teens. This young, college co-ed has her whole singing career and life ahead of her. She references one of Camel’s radio jingles, sung by Vaughn Monroe, as her inspiration to smoke Camels. The comic makes it seem like by emulating Monroe, the girl sings better than ever. Vaughn Monroe (1911-1973) was a big band singer and actor, who holds two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was struggling with respiratory illness and a bleeding stomach ulcer, most likely induced by smoking, when he passed away from surgery – an attempt to treat one of these conditions – in 1973.
