Personified cigarettes are appealing like cartoon characters. Even after laws were passed to discourage manufacturers from marketing to young people, and no real people were used in the ads, cigarette people standing in for real people—sun bathing, celebrating birthdays, romancing—continue to connect smoking with powerful moments of joy.
