Comments:
This early image pre-dates the onset of major mass marketing efforts by tobacco companies to target women. This advertisement, illustrated by Lewis Baumer (1870-1963), also the artist for Pall Mall Magazine, features an elegant, fashionable young woman coyly exhaling a ribbon of cigarette smoke as her cigarette hangs sensuously from her rouged lips. As early as 1922, tobacco advertisements like this one were capitalizing on young audiences with words like “pleasure” and “purity.”
