Lenore Kight Wingard (1911-2000) provides the testimonial for this Camel advertisement. Wingard held the most swimming titles of any woman at the time, and was an American Olympic Bronze (1936) and Silver (1932) Medalist in 400-meter freestyle swimming. This ad was printed in 1936, coinciding with her second and final Olympic appearance. In this ad, Wingard claims that Camels ”help me enjoy eating” due to their supposed ability to ”speed up the flow of digestive fluids” and ”increase alkalinity.” Wingard’s excellence in swimming is thus attributed to her proper digestion, which, according to the ad, is made possible by Camel cigarettes.
