Donna Atwood (1925-2011) was a figure skating star. For 15 years, she starred as the “Sweetheart of the Silver Blades” in the touring ice show, “Ice Capades,” mentioned in this ad for publicity. Camel claims that Camels are “her favorite smoking routine.” The ad shows her performing amazing stunts on ice, and also displays her in a skimpy outfit chatting with officers from the Army and Navy. These officers speak to the World War II effort, as does the wartime shortage on cigarette brands mentioned in the copy text, and the “Buy War Bonds Stamps” logo at the bottom of the ad. This ad targets women who look up to Atwood, as well as men who find her attractive. She died of respiratory problems in 2011, according to a Los Angeles Times report.
