Born November 22, 1926, Lew Burdette was starting pitcher for the Boston and Milwaukee Braves and the 1957 World Series MVP. An excellent control pitcher with a 1.84 walk average, in 1959 he threw a 1-0 shutout, winning a game in the 13th inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates, who had pitched a perfect game the first 12. he was rumored to have thrown balls illegally altered by application of saliva or other liquid, “spitballs”. He died of lung cancer on February 6, 2007.
