He walks majestically over the sand houses that the children have built, and grabs your beach chair when you leave it for just a moment. And throws his lighted cigarette stubs just where you'll be sure to step on them, and scares all the children with his coughing so that they think a terrible sea monster is pursuing them. He's the worst pest I ever saw! Such manners and such barking! He oughta smoke Old Golds, Not a cough in a carload!
This comic advertisement describes an abhorrent man at the beach, who stomps on children’s sand castles, steals your chaise lounge, “throws his lighted cigarette stubs just where you’ll be sure to step on them” and coughs so hard that children run away for fear that he is a “terrible sea monster.” The answer to his bad manners is obviously to switch to Old Golds. The comic was illustrated by Clare A. Briggs (1875-1930).
