In this ad, American Academy Award-winning actor Wallace Beery (1885-1949) endorses Old Gold and announces his surprise that a leading lady of the time would endorse any other cigarette. He claims that “nearly every seasoned star smokes O.Gs.” because “they’re free from artificial flavor that hands your throat a rasp and quaver cough and wheeze.” Beery committed every mother’s worst nightmare when he ran away from home and joined the circus at age 16, but found himself on Broadway two years later. His Broadway appearances eventually led him to the studios in Hollywood, where he would act in over 250 movies during his career. He passed away at age 64 from a heart attack.
