MGM star, tells how the throat strain of tough roles has led him to smoke Luckies for 10 years

Comments:

This advertisement for Lucky Strikes presents its cigarettes as “easy on your throat.” Academy Award-winning actor Wallace Beery (1885-1949) provides the celebrity testimonial for this ad, which claims that “throat strain of ‘tough’ roles has led him to smoke Luckies for 10 years.” Most likely, of course, the throat strain was due to smoking Luckies! The advertisement is also a publicity stunt for production company MGM, especially transparent due to the ad’s mention of two other MGM stars: Spencer Tracy (1900-1967), who suffered from emphysema for over 15 years and passed away from a heart attack at the age of 67, and Joan Crawford (1905-1977) who was suffering from cancer when she passed away from a heart attack at the age of 72. Walter Beery starred in over 250 movies in fewer than 40 years. He passed away from a heart attack at the age of 64.
