Cigarette
Comments:

This woman’s purple hat is the showpiece of her outfit, and so the Old Gold cigarette is carefully positioned right next to the hat. Under the image, the advertisement cites “Mr. John” as the maker of the hat. Milliner John Pico John (1902-1993), known popularly as Mr. John in the 40’s and 50’s, designed hats for famous film, opera, and stage actresses, as well as for society women. In 1953, when this ad was printed, Marilyn Monroe wore a Mr. John headdress in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. This ad places Old Gold cigarettes on the same plane as a Mr. John hat as a notable fashion accessory. Additionally, the cigarette allows the woman to connect with the handsome young man, also lighting up.
