This ad maximizes on romance and sexual allure to advertise Lucky Strike cigarettes. The advertisement capitalizes on the general public’s desire to feel luxurious during the financial hardships of the Great Depression. The illustrator of this advertisement, Haddon Sundblom (1899-1976) was a famous advertisement artist. He created three iconic corporate characters in his career: Aunt Jemima, the Coca-Cola Santa Claus, and Quaker man for Quaker Oats. In a 1956 issue of the American Artist Magazine, Frederic Whitaker stated that Sundblom’s “men are men. His women are desirable, his children are adorable. He gives the human race a cause for self respect.”
